General Information about Kola Science Centre.
Kola Science Center was founded in 1930 by Academician A.E. Fersman
as a Khibiny Alpine Station of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Now KSC is the
largest research complex located over the Polar Circle. The KSC includes
10 nstitutes ( Geological, Mining, Chemistry and Technology of Rare Elements
and Mineral Raw Materials, Industrial Ecology of the North, Polar Geophysi-
cal, Polar Alpine Botanical Garden - Institute, Economy, Informatics and
Mathematical Modelling of Technological Processes, Physical and Technical
Problems of the Northern Energetics, Murmansk Marine Biological) , Kola
Regional Seismological Centre, 3 pilot plants, Publishing House, Scientific
Library, network of observatories and monitoring stations, 2 research
vessels, Designer' office and workshops for new technological equipment,
Computer Centre. At KSC there are the Scientific Councils for Defence of
Doctor's Theses in Mining Technology and Economy, the Council for Problems
of North Natural Resources Rational Utilization, the Information Agency
"Perspectiva", the Centre of Ecological Information "Econord", the Ecologi-
cal Education Public School, the Consulting Social-Economics Centres at
Murmansk, Vologda, Arkhangelsk, the Geological Museum, the Exploration
and Development of the North Museum, the Exhibition of advanced non-
wasteless technology for mineral resources utilization, the Arboretum
and Conservatory with collection of local flora and introduced rare
plants.
Research activities: Geological, geochemical and geophysical studies
of the Baltic Shield and Barents sea shelf; investigation on the Polar
marine and terrestrial ecosystems; elaboration of methods for nature
protection and genetic fund reservation ; creation of wasteless techno-
logy for utilization of mineral raw materials; polar agriculture and
mariculture; research for physical processes in Polar atmosphere, ionosphere
and magnetosphere, estimation of key impact of northern environment on human
health; analysis relationship of technoosphere and biosphere in urbanized
cold climate areas, searching a way for sustainable development of Arctic
region; designing a harmless technology for underground construction for
nuclear power station and waste disposal; elaboration of optimal strategy
for energy supply and for effective management of social and economic
development of the European North.
