The scientific library of Kola science center of the RAS
is one of the oldest and largest scientific libraries on the Kola Peninsula. It was founded
in 1930 on the basis of the Hibinskaya mountain station "Tietta", present KSC RAS. Various
scientific books on geology, mineralogy, crystallography, mining and other studies, including
rarity books dated to XVII - XIX c., in total 6000 units served as a ground for it. It
was academician A.Ye. Fersman who presented all those books to "Tietta". The library
comprises several buildings. At present 8 institutes out of 10 dispose of the library
departments, which are located in Apatity, Kirovsk and Murmansk. There are 16 workers
on the staff of the library. The workers of the KSC RAS have at their disposal 9 loans
and reading rooms. Students and people employed at other organizations also have an
opportunity to make use of the reading rooms and inter-library exchange system
The library stock includes over 500000 units, including 150000 units in foreign languages.
The following stocks are singled out in the library:
- the stock of the regional literature, amounting to 3000 units;
- the stock "The works of the scientists of the KSC RAS", amounting to 2000 units and including
monographs, collected articles, main points of the reports, preprints, abstracts, deposited
manuscripts and notifications of procedures from 1930.
The library provides literature for the following institutes: Geological, Mining, Polar geophysical,
Murmansk marine biological, the Institute of chemistry and technology of rare elements and mineral
resources, the Institute of economic problems, the Institute of physico-technical problems of the
energy of the North, the Institute of the North ecology problems, the Institute of informatics and
mathematic modeling of technological processes, the Polar-Alpine botanical garden-institute,
Kola regional seismologic center of the Geophysical service of the RAS. The library id completed
according to the lines of their research work. The central scientific library of the KSC RAS is
included into the centralized library system of the LNSc RAS. The sources of acquisition:
centralized - LNSc RAS provides us with Russian
books and foreign periodicals.
independently - we subscribe for Russian
periodicals through "Rospechat," agency, VINITI (All-Union Institute of scientific and technical
information), Russian press agency "Science" and other souses.
Information services and output of the library:
- common library services;
- selection and giving out of the literature on demand
- preparation of bibliography and databases;
- subject exhibitions and new receipts exhibitions;
- retrospective search;
- inter-library exchange system;
- issue of references for special purposes;
- services connected with the database: distribution of the DB: floppy disks,
issue of bulletins, issue of subject references on demand.
With the advent of a computer in 1996 and applying of MARK programme, the informational,
bibliographical and reference system of the library becomes more computer-aided. At present
the library has at its disposal 6 computers and a copy machine, access to INTERNET, electronic
and facsimile communication links.
The library has at its disposal the following databases, set up in 1996:
"The works of the scientists of the KSC RAS" - includes publications from 1991. Retrospective
indexes comprise the works covering the period from 1930 to 1990.
"Kola land" - includes publications from 1993 and present an electronic version of the
retrospective index "The Kola peninsula", published jointly with Murmansk state regional
universal scientific library before 1993. On its basis a quarterly bulletin "The Kola land"
is put out. It presents a richest collection of publications about the Kola Peninsula,
which includes literature from 1930; it amounts to over 100.000 documents.
"Electronic catalogue" - includes new receipts from 1996. It includes over 5000 units
(1st May, 2002). The monthly "Bulletin of new receipts" is edited on its bases.
The sources of the DB comprise all incoming literature and analytic list of books,
magazines and all information bodies' editions.
The attendance and services are free of charge.
Office hours: Monday - Friday, 8.30 - 17.00, dinnertime 12.45 - 14.00.
