Kalinnikov Vladimir Trofimovich

(born on November 27, 1935) – an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1980), a member of Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1980), chairman of Presidium of the Kola science centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1985), a member of the bureau of the Department of physicochemistry and technology of inorganic materials, a member of the Scientific council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on physical and chemical grounds of semi-conductor materials technology, a member of the Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation for regional scientific and technical policy and interaction with the higher education institutions, an adviser of the governor of the Murmansk region for the science and innovative policy issues. Doctor of chemistry («Magnetochemistry of exchange clusters of transitive metals», 1976), an honored worker of science and technology of RSFSR (1986), professor (1979), an honorary freeman of the city of Apatity (2005).

( After graduation from the chemistry department of the Moscow State University V.T.Kalinnikov worked as a junior researcher at A.A.Baykov Institute of metallurgy of the AS of the USSR (1959-1962), an assistant, a senior lecturer of the Moscow physics and technology institute (1962-1968), a senior researcher, the head of Laboratory of chemistry of semiconductors of the Institute of organic and inorganic chemistry of AS of the USSR (1968-1981). Since 1981, director of the Institute of chemistry and technology of rare elements and mineral raw materials of the Kola science centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, at present – Chairman of Presidium of the KCS of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 1985). In 1991-1995 V.T.Kalinnikov headed the International committee for scientific research and higher education in the Barentsregion, he is a member of the International scientific council of the Arctic centre of Finland. As the head of regional programs "Barentsregion", "Nature-Kola-Finnmark", "Sustainable development of the Euro-Arctic region" V.T.Kalinnikov performs the coordination of cooperation of scientific organizations of the Barentsregion with a view of a large scale involvement of the newest engineering-technological achievements of Scandinavian, English and American research organizations and firms in the modernization of the industrial sphere of the Northern economic region.
(V.T.Kalinnikov's scientific interests – inorganic chemistry, magnetochemistry of inorganic compounds, technology of materials for quantum electronics, hydrometallurgy of complex mineral raw materials. V.T.Kalinnikov has been engaged in basic research on magnetochemistry of inorganic compounds, thanks to this fact the modern theoretical basis of materials technology of magnetic semiconductors has been created. Under his management the most perfect of the world known technologies of materials for opto - and acoustoelectronics one the basis of lithium niobate and tantalite has been developed and implemented on industrial scale, new promising classes of compounds possessing nonlinear properties have been found. Some methods of synthesis of crystals with pre-set technical parametres for magnetocontrollable modulators of laser radiation, monolithic integrated microwave and semi-conductor schemes on a single crystal, of optical memory devices have been developed. For these developments V.T.Kalinnikov was awarded the S.N.Kurnakov Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences for his work in 1987.
(On the basis of principles of quantum chemistry and the variation theory of disturbances a generalized model of angular overlapping as the most convenient and universal parametrical method of the theoretical description and forecasting of the electronic structure of the isolated and exchange-bound ions of transitive metals in complexes and inorganic crystals, their magnetic, optical and thermodynamic properties has been developed. This method provides opportunities for qualitative selection of materials with pre-set ferromagnetic, optical and fermentative (catalytic) properties, while the forecast estimations of properties of coordination metalloorganic compounds provide a rational strategy of synthesis of new materials for manufacture of devices of the magnetic computer memory, optoelectronics, enzymes and biomedical preparations. For this work V.T.Kalinnikov is awarded L.A.Chugaev Prize of Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 2000.
(Under V.T.Kalinnikov's scientific management the modernization of technological base of mining-metallurgical companies of the Euro-Arctic region was carried out. The technology of hydrometallurgical processing of Khibiny nephelines for production of coagulants-flocculants, amorphous silica and components of explosives of new type was developed and implemented on a commercial scale. For this work V.T.Kalinnikov was given the Award of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology for 1997. The fundamentals of hydrometallurgical technologies of complex ores of titanium, niobium, zirconium, yttrium and rare earths, offering opportunities of development of unique deposits were created. The development of theoretical fundamentals of complex processing of nonconventional titanium-rare-metal and alumo-silicate raw materials was given a State award in the field of science and technology for 2000. On the basis of extracting technology developed at the institute, at "Severonikel" JSC smelter in 1999 the manufacture of cobalt salts was launched, the development of manufacturing technique of electrolytic copper is continued.
( V.T.Kalinnikov successfully combines the management of the Institute and the Science Centre with scientific-organizational activity: he is vice-president of the Academic Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences for coordination of activity of regional branches and regional science centers; V.T.Kalinnikov is a member of Academic councils of the Russian Academy of Sciences for physical and chemical fundamentals of metallurgical processes, for ceramic and other nonmetallic materials, for physical and chemical fundamentals of semi-conductor materials technology; the commission for implementation of «Strategy of economic development of the Murmansk region till 2005»; the International committee for scientific research and higher education in the Barentsregion, the Interdepartmental council of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Russia and the Russian Academy of Sciences for issues of regional scientific and technical development and cooperation; editorial boards of magazines «Chemical technology», «Perspective materials», «Resources, technology, economy».
(V.T.Kalinnikov is chairman of dissertation board of the Institute of Chemistry and Technology of Rare Elements and Mineral Raw materials (IKHTREMS). Under his management 35 candidate and 6 doctoral theses have been prepared for defense. With his participation in Apatity the Kola Branch of Petrozavodsk State University (KBPSU) and Apatity Branch of Murmansk State Technical University (ABMSTU), where he is the head of chair of chemical technologies (ABMSTU) and that of chemistry (KBPSU).
(V.T.Kalinnikov has been given orders «Merit for the Fatherland» of the IV degree (2007), of Honour (1995), of Friendship (1999), «Sacred Sofia» (2003), a P.L.Kapitsa medal of the Russian Academy of natural sciences (1996), he won the award of the Government of the Russian Federation (1997), the State award of the Russian Federation (2000), N.S. Kurnakov award of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1989), L.I.Chugaev award (2000), S.T.Kishkin award (2006), Koptyug award (2008).
