MATISHOV GENNADI GRIGORIEVICH

Work status: director of the Murmansk marine biological institute KSC RAS

Academic degree, academic status: Ph.D. (Geogr.) (1973), Dr.Sc. (Geogr.) (1981) Corr.member of the RAS (1990). Academician RAS (1997). Professor. President of the South Science Center (2004). Councilor of the Governor of the Murmansk region on science, technological policy and ecology. Director of the Murmansk marine biological institute KSC RAS (since 1981).

Biographical information: born 01.01.1945, graduated from the Rostov State University (1967).

A specialist in biooceanology, ecology and geology of the Western Arctic seas. He worked out an original model of quaternary freezing of the Barents-Karsk region and deglaciation processes at the Arctic shelf, which provides explanation for oceanic nature evolution and contemporary dynamics of arctic ecosystems. Under his leadership the Murmansk marine biological institute KSC RAS became an important center of the Arctic studies. The institute is in the lead of the project "The Barents Sea" of FCST "World's ocean". To maintain traditions of MMBI, he re-estimated the ecological situation at the Barents Sea, formulated destabilization causes (such as over-catch, man-caused pollution and the other) and stabilization efforts for the crisis situation in the Barents Sea in the 80-s. Under his leadership the area of expeditionary research of MMBI was substantially extended in the 80-s. Together with the Barents and White Seas it included the Norwegian, Greenland, Kara, Laptev, Bering and Baltic Seas and the south seas of the European part of Russia, namely Azov, Black and Caspian Seas. An organizer, leader and participant of dozen of high-latitude expeditions, which embraced the Schpitsbergen archipelago, the Frantz-Josef Land, New Land, North Land. Seasonal biological stations were established at the Schpitsbergen archipelago and Frantz-Josef Land; the Azov branch was established in 2001 in Rostov-on-Don. Expeditions at atomic icebreakers of Murmansk marine steamship line on the Northern Seaway, which were started by MMBI in 1997 are unique in its essence and received data. Under his leadership MMBI began studying chemical pollution and radioactivity in the arctic seas and on the Kola Peninsula. A new line of investigation - radiation ecological oceanology was founded in the 90-s. The contribution of global, regional and local sources into radioactive pollution of the ecosystems at Arctic Ocean and the Northern Atlantics was determined. The radioactive nuclide content trends since the beginning of the nuclear weapon tests to our time were discovered (including researches in the area where the atomic submarine "Kursk" collapsed in 2000), these data serves as a basis for ecological situation forecasting at the seas of Russia. Thanks to the scientific authority of G.G. Matishov and experience in complex researches in Arctic Ocean, the MMBI headed the work on the national scale on Assessment of the influence on the environment (AIE) by oil and gas prospecting and production on the Arctic shelf. MMBI possesses a license for expert works and represent a head organization determining the ecological grounds for some projects on hydrocarbon raw materials development. A thorough study of sea mammals, adaptation of these animals for the conditions of the Arctic, development of technologies of scientific-technological complexes for keeping sea mammals in captivity and training them as future assistants of man at underwater and repair works in the process of driving and exploitation of oil- and gas-pipe lines. Being a director of MMBI he is engaged in important scientific-organizing activity. He is a member of some scientific councils and committees: on study of Arctic and Antarctic, on ecological problems and crisis situations "Ecological problems of the European part of Russia"; a member of the National committee RAS on international geosphere-biosphere program, of international committee on the study of fluctuations of the World's Ocean level, a member of drafting committees of the journals "Oceanology" and "Oceanologia" of the Polish Academy of Science. He is a co-chairman in the first group of the work group dealing with shelf oil-and gas resources exploration of Russian-Finland committee on scientific and technological cooperation. In 2001 he took part in parliamentary hearing of the State Duma of the RF and presented a report "Preservation of marine ecosystems and bioresources in connection with oil - and gas production on the Arctic shelf". Being a member of a board of directors of the Institutes RAS, he actively promotes broadening of fundamental researches of seas and oceans for the sake of defence, environmental and national safety of Russia.

For achievements in scientific and scientific-organizing activity he was awarded the orders "Honor sign", "For marine services", medals "Labour veteran", "300 years of the Russian Fleet", letters of honor from the Presidium RAS and the Governor of the Murmansk region.
