President of the Kola branch of AS of the
USSR from 1961 to 1970. He graduated from the Leningrad state university department of geochemistry, mineralogy. PhD
(geology &mineralogy) (1949). Dr.Sci. (geology &mineralogy) (“Natural series of rocks of nickel bearing intrusions”, 1972).
After his graduation from the university in 1941 he was sent to work at the Kola base of ŔS of the USSR. In June 1941 he
left for the army and fought at the Karelian front in the 7th air force army: in the detachment of aircraft maintenance as
a superintendent of a depot till 1947, then he served as a technician foę maintenance of optical devices. In 1948 he
returned to work to the Kola branch of AS of the USSR. In 1949 he was appointed the head of sector of geology and
petrography, and from 1953 to 1961 he worked as director of the Geological institute. In 1961 he was approved the
chairman of the Presidium of the Kola branch of AS of the USSR. The study of the petrology of Monchegorsk nickel
bearing pluto was the basic direction in his research. The structural analysis of Sopcha mass he carried out under
the guidance of prof. N.A.Eliseev in 1946-1949 allowed to make the first geological-structural map of the mass.
In 1949 – 1953 E.K.Kozlov studied the geology and structures of deposits of impregnated and nodular ores in that pluto.
Based on the data he had obtained there were prepared recommendations for the direction
of prospecting and exploration
works within the Monchegorsk district, which were then used by geological-prospecting teams. An important achievement in
scientific research of this period is the differentiation of ultrabasic rocks of Monchegorsk pluto in horizontal direction
established by E.K.Kozlov which was an essential contribution to the knowledge about crystalline differentiation
of magma. In 1967 in his book “Basic and ultrabasic complexes of the Monche-Volchye-Losevye tundras”, he had
written together with B.A.Yudin and V.S.Dokuchaeva on the basis of a structural-petrologic analysis of magmatic bodies,
he made a suggestion about cyclic development of magmatism in the Monchegorsk district, having shown, that each
cycle began with the formation of ultrabasic and ended with introduction of acid rocks. After distinguishing three groups
of intrusions relative to folding, he made an important conclusion about the great potential of sulphidic copper-nickel ores
of platform intrusions.
The monograph of 1973 “Natural series of rocks of nickel bearing intrusions and their metallogeny” became a large
report dealing with the basic and the ultrabasic magmatism of the central part of the Kola Peninsula. Evgeniy Konstantinovich
was one of the first scientists, who brought up the question of the heterogeneity of granulite series rocks and the need in
studying their metallogeny. Since he was closely connected with industrial organisations, he took an active part in the
development of programs and long-term projects of the direction of prospecting & exploration in the Kola Peninsula.
He supervised the investigations of many post-graduate students and applicants for a scientific degree, including workers
of industrial companies, who became subsequently PhD holders (candidates of sciences).
For his military and labour merits he had many government awards, including such orders as “Sign of Honour"and "Labour
Red Banner”, medals “For labour valour”, "For the victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945”
“For defence of the Soviet Polar region”, “Twenty years of the victory in the Second World War 1941-1945”, signs
“Honourable subsoil explorer” and “25 years of the victory in the Second World War”. In 1970 E.K.Kozlov was
given a title and a medal of “Honourable citizen of the city of Kirovsk”. In total 33 of his scientific papers including
two monographs have been published.
His basic publications are as follows: “Basic and ultrabasic complexes of the Monche-Volchye-Losevye tundras”, 1967;
“Natural series of rocks of nickel bearing intrusions and their metallogeny”, 1973.
