Complex interdisciplinary studies of the KSC of the Russian Academy of Sciences provide expansion of the knowledge base and the data necessary for finding the major factors and regularities, controlling the condition and dynamics of natural systems interaction in a polar region of the Earth, determining the resource potential and stable providing of conditions for life and effective economic activity of man in the Euro-Arctic region. Taking into account the specific character of the region and the geographical position of the Kola science centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences the effort of its scientific personnel should be concentrated on working out of the following basic scientific directions:

Studying the properties and parameters of natural systems of the Euro-Arctic region, determination of their place and role in the global geospheric processes; the estimation of the scales of geochemical transformation of the matter in the Arctic geobiospheric systems, investigation of their temporal and spatial variability to identify the trends of natural evolution and the prediction of their infringement under the influence of man-caused factors; the estimation of resource potential of the Euro-Arctic region.

Development of scientific bases of non-destructive wildlife management, creation of ecologically safe technologies for rational management of natural and technogenic raw materials, for development of underground space of the Euro-Arctic region and for maintenance of the quality of habitat and sustainment taking into account the specificity of the North; development and perfection of methods and monitoring systems and stabilization of the balance of technosphere and environment. Working out and development of regional information systems and the automated systems of teaching. Working out of scientific bases of the rational power policy and development of ecologically safe power-engineering in the Euro-Arctic region.

Investigation of social and ethnic structure of the society, dynamics of migratory processes, formation and distribution of manpower, level and quality of life in the Polar region taking into account the specificity of traditional management methods of indigenous population of the North; development of scientific bases of the North economy management and providing of steady social and economic development of the Euro-Arctic region.
